Free private room & bathroom in beautiful Cambridge neighborhood in exchange for help with family

Available now … Furnished private bedroom plus large private modern bathroom and separate private storage area, in one of Cambridge’s most beautiful, quiet neighborhoods. Our home is less than a 15-minute walk to Harvard Square and a five-minute... walk to the Charles River.

In exchange for free rent, plus all paid-for utilities (electric, gas, cable, water, insurance, etc), the agreement would entail your working approximately 20 hours/ week on behalf of our family, helping out with our kids and dogs. Specifically, you would help drive our 3 kids (ages 13, 12 and 9) to their various after-school commitments, and you would help walk and feed our two sweet dogs. A minimal commitment on one of the two weekend days would be involved as well. When we travel out of town, we would also hope you could house-sit and take care of the dogs. We have a car for your driving use and will cover the cost of gas and insurance.

Candidates must be non-smokers and experienced drivers with a clean driving record. We will also ask for at least three references. Most importantly, candidates must genuinely enjoy kids and dogs and have a kind and positive disposition! As our kids are getting older, this is less of a ‘child-care’ situation and more about driving and helping navigate a busy family schedule. Still, enjoyment of kids and animals is a prerequisite here, as you’ll be spending a decent amount of time with both!

This situation is not for everyone. You would be sharing our kitchen with us (although there is a mini-fridge in your room) and generally be within and among the flow of our five-person family on a daily basis. We do not allow overnight guests or larger, party-type gatherings, and as an early-to-bed/ early-to-rise family, we prefer someone who is quiet and unobtrusive. But for those who are interested in living rent-free in a nice home within minutes of Harvard and have time in the afternoons and weekends to help a family of five, this could be your dream situation.

If interested, please write with a cover letter introducing yourself, and explaining why this might be a good fit. We plan to Zoom interview a handful of candidates before inviting a few people to our home for a final interview.

Thank you. We look forward to hearing from you!
